Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS Christmas operations

Per my NS contact I met with earlier this afternoon:

NS will be shutting down ops starting around 2PM Christmas eve. They will be trying to get crews home for the holidays.

The hot intermodal traffic will as of eastbounds stop in Conway while hot westbounds will stop at Toledo or what ever major terminal eastbounds and westbounds are closest to.

Ops are to resume as of 3PM Christmas Day with crews getting rested and getting road trains moving again.

Maybe, maybe not....but all roads serve customers that cannot shut down because doing so costs millions to restart.....paper machines for one thing don't work well until they are boiling hot and letting it get cold is something you do only because it has broken down. So that industry is one that WILL need empties all day every day.....I know one mill that gets 20 or 30 empties three times a day....and could load more if we could bring them in....but a day is only 24 hours long so we do what we can. And yes we bend way over backward because the money they pay makes it very worthwile to do.

There is a difference between the phrases "supposed to" and "what actually happens"...

As far as "the needs of the customer", all I will say is that depends.
