RJ Corman SD40T-2s in a Winter Wonderland

Since 2005, RJ Corman has operated the former Chesapeake and Ohio Loup Creek Branch between Thurmond and Pax, West Virginia. The most active customer is a coal loadout at the western end of the 16 mile line in Pax. Once a coal train is loaded, one part of the line presents an operational challenge that must be overcome before the train can safely make it east to the CSX interchange in Thurmond.

The 6 miles between Pax and Mount Hope have enough steep grades and curves that loaded coal trains must be broken up into three sections. In my opinion, the second and third sections are the most amusing to watch due to the pair of former Southern Pacific "Tunnel Motors" working hard getting the loads over to Mount Hope. Watch as the SD40T-2 duo roars upgrade in run 8 and utilizes dynamics downgrade to safely get the loads of black diamonds to Mount Hope.

Enjoy and thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video.

Those coal hopper cars had rounded bottoms; we’ve not seen that before.

How are those cars unloaded?

Thanks, Jack
