Doing what EMD intended a RS1325 to do. (sort of)
Author: Off-pending

When EMD originally cataloged the RS1325 model, it was envisioned as a passenger terminal switcher. The short hood end was to be equipped with a boiler for steam heat to keep cars warm during switching moves. With passenger traffic declining, no one was looking to buy a model so equipped. In 1960 the Chicago and Illinois Midland was looking to add to their locomotive fleet and ordered 2. There was no need for steam heat and both units were equipped with short hoods. #31 worked for the C&IM and later I&M for 60 years in freight service. In 2020 #31 was retired by the I&M and aqquired by the Monticello Railway Museum.

On Saturday May 14th the #31 was assigned to the museums regular passenger train. 60 some years later the unit is in a round about way doing what the designers at EMD wanted her to do.

Model Railroader back in the day had the "official" drawings with the higher short hood for the steam generator.

So basically it was an updated NW5, which wasn't a big seller, either.

EMD ran a full-page ad in Trains and the trade press before the units were built, with small thumbnail side elevations of the entire catalog, but the RS1325 was shown in a GMD1 carbody

Sadly sister engine #30 is in line to be scrapped in North Carolina. The news story should be in the Trains Newswire later today
