Mystery Locomotive and Others in Lake Erie Land Today

Vermilion OH

On this date in 1929 Bell Laboratories performed the first color TV demo in New York City - or so says the internet.  Hmm, I wonder what was on ?

Spent just a short time at the docks today but caught some interesting sights and power.

1 - 3. The 316 was coming east out of Bellevue on the NKP as what looks like a grandfather and his grandson are out for some fishing in the Vermilion River. As the train passes, grandpa seems to be talking more interest, but the lad is content with his fishing. Power is NS 8047 and 7552.

4. Grandpa really takes notice of that third unit !  Yeah, a what is it ? GSHX 3380. Apparently a Battery Tier 4 Hybrid by AMPS (Alternative Motivepower Solutions). If anyone has more knowledge or detail, please let us know. Model, Diesel Engine Type, Frame #, Heritage, History, destination, etc.

5. A closer look at the GSHX unit. Personally, just give me a GP9 .... or a GP38 and lets go to work. I've had to vet a number of these "green locos" and am not a fan.

6. Over at the other bridge we see more fishermen as an unidentified eastbound (if anyone knows the train symbol I'd appreciate it) comes by with some more goodies of motive power. Leading off is NS 4130 and 9679 followed by 4047. Then ...

7.  ... an old timer, GP40-2 NS 3024. This is ex Conrail 3319 built in May 1978 and was once one of the hottest of the hot in the new Conrail fleet hauling TV and other time sensitive trains.

8. Then we have an ex CN C40-8 that started life as C&NW 8551 back in August 1991. It now has NIWX reporting marks but has kept the CN number. A little background check and someone has done some upgrades and calls it a C41-8. "New EFI 7FDL16 engine with split radiator cooling and 752AH traction motors". NIWX reporting marks belong to the Northern Illinois & Wisconsin RR. I'll still take the GP40-2.

9. And on the way back home the 24M rolls by with NS 3642 and 8028.

First I've seen that AMPS thing. Doesn't look new ... flat paint and some rust streaks.

Junk freight with the CN NIWX should have been 310 per reports off the Heads up group on Facebook.

Google says:27 June 1929: the first public demonstration of color TV was held by H. E. Ives and his colleagues at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York. The first images were a bouquet of roses and an American flag. A mechanical system was used to transmit 50-line color television images between New York and Washington.
