End of the line for MDS' Conrail GE's
Author: tuxedorailfan

In response to ShortlinesUSA's post last week, it does appear that the ex Conrail GE's that have been in service on Meridian Southern have finally been put into storage with the pending arrival of former CFW 103, another Geep.

When MDS first acquired these units, all 5 ran. 4047 became the first parts unit and has been stripped of usable parts for years, but 4o46 was idled a few months ago. It appears that within the last week the final 3 units 4039, 4051, and 4082 were recently parked in the storage yard. 4051's number boards and horn were stolen about a year or so ago and never replaced.

The disposition of the Conrail units are unknown at this time. But after years of being ran hard with Conrail, then another few years on hard running on NS, their time is past due. Not sure if they're just going to store them as reserve units or if they will list them for sale at some point. Will update whenever I get more information.

The only GE's left on the active roster currently are the 2 former Santa Fe units #'s 4228 and 4270.

CFW 103 left Birmingham, AL last night headed West.

Out of respect to the railroad, I'm not going to say. Last year they had almost every horn and every set of numberboards stolen off of their roster.
