Hyco & Mayo Power Plants?
Author: JOHNY5ALIVE

Just curious, are the Hyco and Mayo power still operating and receiving a steady supply of unit coal trains?

Duke Energy's website says both plants are still operating.

They are served by Norfolk Southern, as is the plant at Clover, Virginia, not too far away.

Yes for now.   Mayo only runs in emergenices, or if something else is down on the system, Hyco 3 and 4 run the majority of the time in peaking seasons (summer/winter), it's not uncommon to see all 4 units offline these days, (once unthought of).  1 and 2, not so much, unless it's emergency.

So to answer your question. They don't recieve coal like they used to.  Hyco in it's heyday, ~600 days without an outage, recieved multiple trains a day to feed the demand. Now, maybe one every other day in peak times.

Clover, FWIW, it's Dominion Power.

Two empties on the outbound 3/22/18.

11/11/15. Units 1, 3, and 4 offline in the winter.  That was a first for me personally.

Hyco 1 and 2 are scheduled for retirement 2028. Hyco 3 and 4 are scheduled for 2027-2033. Mayo is scheduled for 2028-2035. Whether it happens is anyone's guess.

For those who are wondering... these are plants in central NC near the VA border.

While we are discussing power plants in Va/NC, how about the Belews Creek power plant? Is still operating and receiving coal and limestone? And lastly is it slated for closing anytime soon? Thanks again for all the above information.

Here are the loaded coal train counts for the respective power plants for the past month (30-day period)

Hyco - 21
Belews Creek - 7
Mayo - 4
Clover - 4

Also, in the same timeframe, Belews Creek received 2 loaded limestone trains and Hyco has one planned.

Belews Creek has already been partly converted to natural gas. Coal firing is set to end in 2035. Natural gas firing will remain indefinitely.

Thanks for the info.

Wow.  Duke Power's Belews Creek (north of Winston-Salem, NC) used to aim for two 100 car coal trains a day.

I agree wow!!, when I was working on the NS Virginia Division back in 2010- 2012, the goal was 3 a day for Hyco/Mayo and two a day for Belews Creek, not counting scrubber trains. Man, times are a changing.

Don't wait until 2035 to get your coal train pictures, unless there is a major policy change, they will be gone long, long before then.

Great info Andrew thanks.  Hyco has been slightly more online of late than usual, so that seems to collorborate that data point.

I don't have the personal knowledge of Belews, but that number used to be north of 60 trains a month. 7 is a long way off that mark.  I guess burning gas is working out.

Belews Creek is now setup to burn gas or coal on both units.  They can be running 100% coal, 100% gas or a mix.
