Boats, Helicopters and Trains in Lake Erie Land
Author: train1275

Sunday November 20, 2022

Partly sunny with a stiff chill breeze and plenty of action to photograph today.

1. There have been a number of boats holding off out in the backyard in Lake Erie, including these two spotted this morning; The Frontenac and the Oakglen. Frontenac has been around about 5 days to get into Sandusky with low water here and the Oakglen is bound for Toledo.

2. A New Holland combine has been working the adjacent soybean field at Coen Road as BNSF units 4247 and 4985 roll east with Train 264 for Buffalo, Binghamton and New England.

3. That 2nd unit has a war bonnet patch panel on it.

4. - 6. Off on the NKP trying to intercept a 316, or .... well anything. Got skunked except for passing this Winco Power Line Services crew working with heli-linemen on the big transmission line near Shinrock with their McDonnell Douglas MD369F/ MD500F helicopters. I don't think this job is for me, and it must have been pretty cold up there in the wind.

7. & 8. So back up to the Chicago Line at Ceylon, OH, and a catch of another very short 29P with NS 9737 and 9684; passing the MofW ballast cars, and a going away showing all the snow pack from the big Buffalo Snow storm.

9. A little to the east towards Vermilion is Train 22X caught at Risden Road with NS 4500, 9817 and UP 3863.

10. Another snow-packed consist; NS 9569 and BNSF 9204 on Train 265 cross the Vermilion River in Vermilion, OH.

11. A big 15N with 8 units and a high and wide up front comes on the scene. Everyone to the west is stopping so this train can go safely by. The head-end consist is; NS 4386, 1096, 4446, KCSM 4882, BNSF 6920. CN 2997, CN 3192 and NS 4267.

12. A nice bright KCSM 4882.

16. NS 4267 and the High and Wide load.

17. Train 16G, now released after the passage of the 15N comes east with NS 1845, 3643 and 1053.

18.  A common sight on the 16G are John Deere tractors.

19.  A really neat Train 309 from East Binghamton, NY comes west with BNSF 7704, 7684 and war bonnet BNSF 720.

20. A closer look at the red and silver war bonnet; BNSF 720.

21. It is a busy afternoon with 28M eastbound with NS 4467 and 1044.

22. Next up with hardly time to catch our breath is the L15 with the usual locomotives; NS 4294 and 4064.

23. Word was out that there was an L20 on the NKP, normally the sole territory of the Train 315 these days. The crew originally called for 316 at Bellevue got bumped off and taxied to Sheffield to catch the L20 that had outlawed, I think from yesterday. While at Oak Point / Beaver Park Marina on the east side of Lorain there was time to admire the web stamping on the rails. 132RE Control Cooled from Bethlehem Steel in Lackawanna, NY rolled in March 1977.

24. Here comes the L20 splitting the 214 signals west of Lorain with long-hood first NS 3328 and 6084. He's heading for Avery to switch out Certainteed, and then to home at Bellevue.

25. The L 20 coming at us. NS 3328, an SD40-2 was built as Southern 3328 in May 1979 and NS 6084, another SD40-2 was built for the N&W in March 1975.

26. A closer look at the NS 6084.

27. And away they go into the setting sun westbound along the shore of Lake Erie in a cloud of smoke and dust.

Whew !!!!   What a day !!!

Wow! A lot of action and color. I had a cousin that worked the high tension lines. He loved it, he even bought himself a bucket truck when he retired so he could make some extra money playing with wires. I get nose bleeds just thinking about being up on those towers!
Thanks for all the interesting posts.

A very interesting post. Lots of material to digest. My hat is off to those guys on the transmission line tower.
