It took 24 years but it finally happened...
Author: JPB

A detoured Norfolk Southern stack train, 28X, was captured riding high above Lanesboro PA on Erie's Starrucca Viaduct at around 9AM Sunday 2/5/23 heading east to Croxton Yard. As I understand it, the deoured 28X was combined with Chicago-Buffalo priority IM train 29P [update: the correct eastbound symbol for this train is 28B], forwarded to Binghamton from Buffalo by NS, and then handed off to NYS&W for the trip to New Jersey over the Central New York line it leases from NS.

I recall that back around 1999 when Conrail breakup was happening, there was NS talk about running scads of double stack trains over the former EL Delaware Division. Of course reality became 6 NYS&W carload freights per week.

How are they making out with crews qualified on the line?

Don't know for sure but I'm guessing a Susquehanna crew was used.

UPDATE: this rerouted stack train 28X was led by an ex-NS NYS&W SD70M-2 4066 (ie there were 4 locomotives pulling the train.) and symbolled SU100X.

The Chicago-Buffalo train is 28B. 29P goes the other way.

That detail notwithstanding, it would have been cool to see this train on the Delaware Division.

You are so right on both counts! Thanks for the catch - I'll fix the typo!

NS also promised great things for the Southern Tier if the state would kick in some cash to the Letchworth Gorge bridge project. IIRC this included stack trains to NJ via Port Jervis.
