Several pics on Facebook.  No washout.  Looks like a string line on the head end. Fairly sharp curve on fill, looks like cars derailed to the inside of the curve.  2 UP motors, 2 NS motors, 2 junk ex Wabash Central, ex IC geeps dead in tow, the two auto rack still on track, derailed covered hopper, then the mess with several empty (nothing coming out of open hatches) 2 bay CEMX covered hoppers and another one of those new NS cover coil cars at the head end of a big pile of cars.

After that media alert sent from NS about those new coil steel cars, I am willing to bet that there was another loose wheel on that coil car that caused this derailment.

That’s not the same type of coil car. Loose wheels are from National Steel Car. The coil car in the Alabama derailment is a FreightCar America built coil car.

Did those two old IC geeps coupled together have alignment control drawbars?  If the train was downgrade in heavy dynamic brake, two units with non-alignment control drawbars coupled could spread the rails.

Good question. I had wondered about that myself.

I recall a wreck they had maybe a couple of decades ago where there may had been a similar issue with a couple of SW1500's which the railroad had sold and was moving to the customer.

How many young employees even know that there are locomotives without alignment control drawbars?

Instructions on not coupling together two locomotives with non-alignment control draft gear used to be in N&W and NS timetables.  Who knows nowadays?  Those N&W units used to have a line under the locomotive numbers on the side of the cab indicating non-alignment control.
