The train derailed just before a bridge over the Roanoke River, taking the bridge out and dumping lots of cars and coal in the river, which is a water supply for Salem (Roanoke gets its water both above the wreck site and from other sources). The bridge was rebuilt quickly. This was before NS and the state of Virginia signed the agreement to sell the line to the state. Never did hear what the cause was. I don't believe the Maryland derailment dumped coal into a water source, so maybe no fine. |
