Interesting move at the east end of Elkhart Yard 3/21/23
Author: JPB

At 1806 Tuesday evening 3/21/23, an unknown to me 41 car westbound manifest arrives Main St crossing at Elkhart on M1 led by NS8134 and UP5601. It crosses over to M3 via CP421 and then 13 minutes later at 1819, shoves east on M3 with conductor riding the covered hopper on the marker and disappears from view. 90 minutes later, NS8134 + UP5601 (working hard) return west on M3 after picking up 109 cars somewhere east of Elkhart. I guess a crew of a previous westbound carload freight dropped its consist east of Elkhart because it didn't have time to bring it into the yard? Listening to the NS radio in the morning of 3/21/23 it sounded like the yard might have been congested.

While not a commom move it most certainly had to be a set dropped off by another train.  M3 extends east to CP412 where it bends south and becomes the Marion branch.  East of 412 the Chicago line goes back to a double main.  Crossovers at CP417 and CP412 so basically two blocks east of Elkhart to park a block of cars on M3 if the yard is full.
