A locomotive and 11 train cars derailed in Jasper on Saturday night, briefly trapping and injuring two crew members, Norfolk Southern and Jasper police said in statements released today. The locomotive rolled on its side, spilling diesel fuel and engine oil. The two injured crew members were briefly trapped in the engine room, according to Jasper police. The crew members were taken to a hospital, treated and released, Norfolk Southern said.

How did they get trapped in the engine room. I think you meant the cab.

Whether right or wrong, the news reports say "engine room".

Haven't seen anything about the cause. I am wondering if, with all of the rain in the region over the best few days, the roadbed was a bit soft.

Derailments seem to be happening all over this USA in the past quarter year.  Lots of "failing" going on in our country "period...and the world in recent years"!!  Hoping for better to come but things not looking good from other side of the BIG BALL!

Official source report there are about 3 to 4 dreailments in the U.S. per week, most not serious. Now the national news is picking up on them.

Whoever wrote the original release has no railroad knowledge and probably figured that "engine room" made the most sense.

Yes. In any kind of public communication, you have to take the reader's knowledge of the subject into consideration

You often see that with "potentially carcinogenic" where the risk is one in millions. People panic...
