A walk in Mckeesport, Pa.
Author: mkancle

I took an hour and a half walk along the Great Allegheny Passage trail in Mckeesport today. Thought some of you might be interested in the pictures that resulted from the outing. First up is a westbound CSX train on the old P&LE main through town.

A wayward parakeet and the Mckeesport Connecting Railroad bridge that spans the Monongahela River. Trains loaded with steel ingots from the blast furnace at the Duquesne Mill would cross this bridge to the National Tube works on the Mckeesport side of the Mon.
The 1891 builders plates were falling apart on both sides of the bridge. These ones probably won't be stolen like so many other have over the years.

A view looking towards Duquesne from the bridge and a super cool glass warning lamp for boats.

A look inside. I think they have a roof issue.

That's great train artifacts and structures but I do feel for that little parakeet. I suppose that it'll be O.K. for a few months but come cold weather it will be history. Guess it must have gotten out of somebodies cage.

The "P Mickey" was short for Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny.  It was the portion of Pittsburgh & Lake Erie RR south of Pittsburgh and was 1/2 owned by the P & LE and 1/2 owned by the New York Central.  Both railroads jointly operated this line.  In 1965, the P & LE bought NYC's share in this railroad.

In researching this, I learned that the  Pittsburgh, McKeesport & Youghiogheny was a remnant of Vanderbilt's scheme to build the South Penn Railroad across Pennsylvania.
