Railfan "lying down on the job."
Author: ddavies

Sometimes the time between trains gets pretty long, so we may rest.  Actually, he has a counter in his hand, and looking under M216 in the foreground to count the cars in M217 passing on the far track.  ;-)

From all the gear that has been carted trackside this must be a "Professional" railfan. I used to think a hand-held scanner scanner, a camera or camcorder and a tripod was serious business. So amatuerish!

Lol, I was also thinking that with today's super long PSR trains a person could get tired just standing there to watch one go by!

Better check himself for ticks when he leaves. Probably not warm enough for chiggers yet.

Impressive dedication.
But wouldn't it be easier to put the scanner to use? Or is there no nearby DED that also announces "total axles"?

That's not a perfect cheat. Sometimes the wayside detectors miscount (I've heard them give an odd axle count even though no FL9 was in the trains), and they don't account for such oddities as articulated autorack cars.

Neat!

Reminds me a bit of our local Mennonite railfans that can often be seen relaxing along the tracks on Sunday afternoons.

Here’s a post from a few years ago…….

At Amtrak's Elkhart Indiana it seems that half of the passengers are Amish or Mennonite.
Most traveling to or from Pennsylvania or rural NY (other areas with a high Amish / Mennonite population).

A few years ago I met a few Amish watching NKP 765 roll through the countryside.

Recling railfan is part of a group of about 6 railfans know as the 'lunch bunch" who come to the Junction every month or so, bringing tables, laptop, and three scanners (along with chips and drinks).  They order a pizza from nearby Kings Pizza.  Some members are know to come out as early as midnight to log trains.  Few take pictures.

Never seen any kind of snake in the 30+ years I've been going to Shenandoah Jct.

Not surprising. Shenandoah Jct. is certainly not choice habitat for the timber rattlesnake. For one thing, there's too many people around. You'd think the resident snake expert would know better.

If you are a truly serious fan, you can count cars simultaneously on 2 passing trains.

Last October, Horseshoe Curve viewing area. A large Amish or Mennonite family arrived, set up for a picnic lunch and proceeded to enjoy and photograph the passing parade.
