Alco Smoke Over Lake Erie Land and a Colorful Belle
Author: train1275

Memorial Day Monday; May 29, 2023
Another beautiful day here in Lake Erie Land.

1. The 28B intermodal went east over the Nickel Plate from Vermilion at GC today and had a KCS Belle leading as it crossed Beaver Creek, and passed Beaver Park Marina. Power is KCS 4180 and UP 6317.

2. & 3.  The Great Lakes Vessel "Calumet" heads into port at Lorain, OH as it makes way up the Black River with twin Alco 16-251's smoking it up. The Calumet was built here in Lorain by American Ship Building in 1973.

7. Then over to Sandusky we catch a loaded coal train coming in on the connector to the Sandusky District (ex-PRR) with the 1218 and 9770. Well, maybe not THE 1218, but that would have been a pretty cool sight to see.

8. NS 9587 and 4479 pass the St. Mary's Cemetery in Sandusky on the 35N.

9. Then to Shinrock on the NKP to see this 10Q, apparently tied down with no crew about 15 miles out of Bellevue, and blocking two road crossings. Heard it come through about 6 hours later, so if someone didn't drive around the horn it was a really long wait. Power is NS 8092, 8034 and 4186.

10. A nice Lyman boat, the "Hi Lily" runs down river in Vermilion.

11. An old Dodge Boat Works wooden boat cruises under the old New York Central bridge over the Vermilion River in Vermilion, OH.

12. Last shot of the day is the 310 with ample geese in the river. Power is NS 4073, 1054 and rear DPU NS 8082

You seem to know your boats, but how do you know that nice wood boat is powered by a Dodge engine?

I was wrong in that this is a Dodge boat from the Dodge Boat Works and likely has a Lycoming engine.
Dodge Boat Works was the company formed by Horace Dodge, Jr. (son of Horace Dodge of Dodge Brothers automobiles).

I probably should have paid more attention to that, but I think he had stone on this run.

As I said, I should have paid more attention, the boat came through the highway lift bridge and we left and it fell off my radar. Many boats coming into Lorain carry stone for asphalt or wholesale / retail from what I understand at the LaFarge dock upriver from the NS RU lift bridge. I went back and looked and the boat is tied up at Amcor down from RU bridge. Amcor makes Aluminum Flux so the boat probably had salt or potash.

Notch76 here on TO is a Lorain guy and may have more or better info.
