Mystery Loco at Paulsboro Marine Terminal
Author: allenrider

Tonight I was watching the YouTube live stream of the Battleship New Jersey being moved from her home in Camden to an intermediate mooring at Paulsboro Marine Terminal.  As she approached the terminal, I spotted a locomotive on the pier in Contrail paint.  It was too distant to make out what model.  Does anyone know anything about it?  I believe this is Conrail Shared Assets territory, but I don't think they have any CR painted locos.  FYI, the museum ship New Jersey is headed to dry dock for preventative maintenance.

Update: Here's a screenshot from the Musuem's live stream.  Poor quality, but not something one sees every day.

Here's a better screenshot from 6ABC Philadelphia.  NS 8098 next to New Jersey.  Quite a comparison.

It's NS Heritage 8098.

Photographed at Conrail's Pavonia Yard in Camden, NJ earlier this week:

I saw chuchubob's post shortly after I put mine up.  I seriously doubt that it is a coincidence that NS's CR heritage unit would show up on a pier at on the same day the battleship New Jersey would moor there.  Kudos to the SAA & NS folks who pulled it off.  Hope they got photos.

This is possibly a new railfan discovery-- Someone who hasn't started their day by checking the location of all 20 NS heritage units and everything else tracked on heritageunits.com. ;-p

I don't see any significance of the Conrail heritage unit and USS New Jersey's mooring at Paulsboro having any connection at all and it certainly was by happenstance. Conrail Shared Assets serves the Paulsboro facility probably every day as they dispatch steel slabs west from there on the NS Harrisburg Line every day of the week.  Whatever NS or CSX loco finds its way to Paulsboro is strictly by whatever power is available at Pavonia.

Happenstance? I'm sure the locomotive being posed by itself in the middle of the pier, and washed just for the occasion was just a coincidence as well? 🤣

I must be as dumb as mud! I watched the video and still see no connection whatsoever of a "Conrail', NS, heritage or not, locomotive, has to do with the moving of the battleship New Jersey. You could park a 1958 Edsel or a horse buggy in the middle of the Paulsboro pier and it would be just as significant.

Conrail must, since they were the ones that set it up. 😉

Very interesting background on the redevelopment of this former BP oil refinery and terminal into an intermodal and bulk cargo facility.  Lots of construction worker jobs.

Maybe they wanted a target for the 16-in guns.

Nobody could find an older GE unit, so no jokes about “U-boat patrol” could be posted.
