Railcams in path of totality for eclipse
Author: md

Does anyone know of a list of which railcams out there would be in the path of totality for the eclipse coming up in a coup,e weeks.  Certainly there seems to be a decent amount that should be close to totality and of course from a railcam perspective its not much to witness other then curiosity.

Off the top of my head:
Tower 55 - Ft Worth, TX
Big Sandy, Tx
Texarkana, Tx
Russellville, Ark
Deshler, Oh
Fostoria, Ohio
Marion, Oh
Berea, Oh
Northeast, Pa.
Fairport, NY

There are so many webcams out there now I’m sure I missed several

Along with Deshler, Fostoria, Berea, etc., the "Vickers"/Northwood, OH camera also will be in the path of totality.

The question I have is why should I care, or anyone else care about the eclipse?  I've seen it get dark and then light again about 20,500 times in my life.  What's one more?

You haven't seen it get dark part way through the day and then light again a few minutes later very often though. Or were you trying to be funny?....

To each their own but don’t knock it till you’ve seen one. I took my two older kids out to Nebraska for the 2017. I had only a passing interest in the eclipse. It was more of an excuse to go railfanning in the Sandhills of Nebraska. We had a great time and it is cherished memory with my kids. Now we have 4 kids and even though I live in the path in Ohio I have backup plans to be in Texas if it’s cloudy at home.
I won’t miss a total eclipse on this continent for the rest of my life if I help it. 5 or 6 more if I’m lucky.

Junctiontower, you could read up about the religious warnings (maybe fanatical? )associated with the event to make it more interesting: seven locations in the US named Nineveh and one in Canada in the path of totality, that eclipse and a previous one that form a cross or the last letter in the Greek alphabet, a third one that forms the first letter in the Greek alphabet (the beginning and the end). There is a bunch more that reportedly relates to Jerusalem, but you get the point. If you don't know what Nineveh refers to, read about Jonah the prophet.

Science can plot eclipses long before they happen (and for at least 100s of years before now) , but I suppose mankind is still superstitious about them as ominous warnings. But the Bible does refer to signs from the sun, moon and stars before the end-times?

I drove all the way up to Wyoming to watch the last big eclipse. My plan was
to photograph trains in that odd light.Maybe with eclipse in background. I found
myself in the middle of Green River yard, In line with only part of the eclipse.
It didn't work out that good but it was fun. I luv Wyoming and I have a friend
who was in ground zero of it, near Pinedale, that I got to stay with and visit.
Boy the traffic coming from there; as I drove up, was massive. Lots people
got an eyeful. I got a good dinner of elk and yams.

Yes, they are warning about a lot of traffic this time around in the US. This one is located in more populous locations than Wyoming. The girlfriend and I were planning to drive south of Fort Wayne (Indiana) but maybe we will stay home. I wasn't planning on driving on the freeways. But we got our glasses and T-shirts from the DNR! Maybe it will rain that day.

The population of Erie, Pa. is predicted to double. I have a daughter who lives there and has invited my wife and myself to come out and witness the spectacular with her. I bought a solar filter for my Nikon, hope its sunny.

Not being funny at all. I could not be less interested or impressed by this phenomenon. We had one in Indiana a few years ago (not as intense) and it was a big yawn as far as I am concerned. I walked out of my office, looked around for about one minute, and went back to work. As I said, getting dark, whether it is in the middle of the day or not is about as exciting to me as watching paint dry, or seeing my 500th GE wide cab in a row go by.

Well, just as you have no interest in this thread, it should be obvious to you that no one involved in this thread has any interest in your unintelligent and disinterested comments on it. If you're so immune to the wonders of the universe I'm kind of surprised that you can be bothered to go on living. Maybe your inability to find joy is why you have to resort to sniping at other people's interests.

the eclipse in october was interesting in how cold it kept that day 10 degrees cooler

the 2017 eclipse i was at wendover, WY junction, i liked how the crickets and birds reacted

even the shadows are neat where it isn't totality

you need a fish eye lens maybe for some neat shots? of the ground and sky, i am not doing that as of now..

__________just another day-------------hardly           in my book        driving 15 hours one way to texas for this one

I'm not sniping, I'm genuinely trying to understand it. I actually AM interested in celestial mechanics, but knowing how and why it happens is good enough for me, I don't have a driving need to SEE it, especially when same thing happens for a different reason every single day. Also, you have NO idea of all the things in this world that bring me joy, including some things I'm pretty sure you won't approve of. I have so many things that bring me joy, I have neither the time nor the finances to pursue even a fraction of them.

If you don't already understand why people are fascinated to see the extremely improbable occurrance caused by a small moon and a large star which are at such specific distances from Earth that they appear almost exactly the same size in the sky, such that every now and again the moon completely obscures the star, thereby creating complete but temporary darkness and a celestial 'diamond ring' in the sky, then I'd suggest you will never understand it.
Also, you might have more time and better finances if you directed your energy away from writing completely pointless posts... just a thought.

What you saw in indiana doesn’t count because it wasn’t totality. Totality or nothing. There is no such thing as 99.9 of totality.

Not much different than steam engines. To a person who doesn’t care about trains a steam engine isn’t anything but you get them trackside when 765 is screaming past at track speed on a steep grade and will come away impressed.

Take the afternoon go east of Ft Wayne and try it out. If you still don’t care afterwards then no worry’s there isn’t another one in the area till 2099 and none one on this website will be alive to see it.
