Action Today in Lake Erie Land
Author: train1275

Saturday March 23, 2024
North Central Ohio
Semi-Sunny, breezy, semi cloudy, temps in the mid-30's.

It seems the last 2 weeks or so that traffic is really slow. Not sure what is missing from the mix exactly, but there are some very long periods of time between trains at times.

1. The daily morning 29P comes west from Buffalo, NY and over the Vermilion River bridge with NS 4457 and BNSF 5452.

2. Train 260 east from 47th Street Chicago is Harrisburg, PA bound with NS 7622 and NS 4776. We got a little snow as can be seen on the dock in the foreground.

3. A sea gull does a one-legged perch on the icy dock.

4. Train 28B, the counterpart to the 29P roars over  with BNSF 8102 and 4628 adding some color.

5. At GC on the NKP west of Vermilion we catch the 11Q coming off the connector from the Lake Shore line with a shiny NS 4786 leading UP 6449. He's heading for Bellevue.

6. The depot and all the associated appurtances except the stub siding have been erased from the landscape here at Ceylon, OH about eight miles west of Vermilion, but the trains still rumble past such as this empty grain train. This is the 45M, and I think it originated from Delmarva, MD. It's lead by NS 7693 and the WFRX 8859. The LS&MS depot stood in the foreground in front of me.

7. The WFRX 8859, one of the ex BNSF fleet which are common sights around here.

8. & 9. Just east of Sandusky along Cleveland Road (Route 6) we intercept the 28V, Baltimore bound intermodal with NS 8176 and 4228 as power.

10. The 28V rumbles past blowing for Perkins Avenue crossing  which is a bit of a poor visibility one with a severe inclined approach right at the intersection of Route 6.

11. Back home in Vermilion and the 315 trundles west back to Bellevue crossing the NKP Vermilion River bridge with BNSF 6548 and 4334. Lots of BNSF power today.

12. At the rear of the 315 was a cut of NS coke hoppers returning west from the Ashtabula docks where they were transloaded into lake boats. The locks are open now and the boat traffic is finally moving once again giving life back to the lake.

Nice material as usual from you. Where was the gull's other leg?

Great series again! I agree traffic seems down over the past two weeks or so here in eastern PA anyway.

Thanks as always for interesting views. Any traces of LSE left in Ceylon?

No nothing really left.
