CPKC comes to Newport on Eclipse Day
Author: DavidP

Several thousand people (me included) watched yesterday's eclipse from the shore of Lake Memphremagog in Newport, VT.  Right as the moon finished its movement between the sun and earth, CPKC's Newport local picked its way through the thinning crowds, headed for the yard south of the lakefront.  As with other Vermont border towns, the railroad scene in Newport is a shadow of it's former self.  Once a division point on the CP line to Wells River, and junction with the Quebec Central branch to Sherbrooke, it's now the furthest reach of CP into Vermont, and interchange point with Vermont Rail System's Washington County Railroad.  The few days a week local is a far cry from the long through freights operated by the CP and B&M into the 1980s, and Boston - Montreal passenger trains that ran into the mid-1960s.

Newport was, indeed, a special place. kerosene switch lamps, white flags, and loads of Alco power into the 80's, plus the B&M pool trains.
