Went eastbound last summer and it was 4 hours of enjoyable relaxation.  Spent most of the time out on deck in the sunshine.  Food was decent and prices were reasonable.  I highly recommend the journey.  Took about 30 minutes to get the car in Ludington.

Fifty years ago I rode the Ann Arbor ferry from Kewaunee, Wisc. to Frankfort, Mich. 
Beautiful day, and I expected the ride to be a piece of cake.  For four hours I wished
I had taken Dramamine.  The Lake wasn't even abnormally rough.  So I suggest you
take the advice you learned in Boy Scouts... Be Prepared.  Then you will be guaranteed
an enjoyable trip.
