Sunday Action in Lake Erie Land
Author: train1275

Sunday April 21, 2024
North Central Ohio
Temps in the mid-40's, overcast and spitting a little snow in the air this morning, warmer and sunny by late afternoon.

1. Looking out this morning to see what the day looked like, and here comes the Alco diesel powered Calumet again. He left Lorain last night and headed towards Cleveland, but now has turned up lake and headed to Marblehead to pick up a load of stone.

2. Also out there was the Kristin Joelle, a tug boat shoving a barge down lake. The Kristin Joelle is a 2400hp boat powered by two CAT 3515's.

3. Heading trackside, and a catch of intermodal Train 260 at Coen Road west of town. He's got NS 7655 and 4198 up front.

4. The 260 rolls east towards Harrisburg with a green at CP 222.

5. Down on the NKP at Shinrock, Train 10Q comes hammering east through the rural Ohio farmlands with NS 4684, 8086 and 1063 up front and NS 4757 as a mid-train DPU.

6. 10Q storms over Barrows Road crossing at "Barrows". Barrows is what they call East Shinrock these days.

7. Watching the 10Q pass by and we catch an ex CNW hopper; AEQX 810179

8. Also in the consist is RBMN 9980.

9. And several N&W hoppers such as NW 178961.

10. NS 4757 is the mid-train DPU.

11. Also in the train were a cut of new NS gondolas such as NS 212019 built in October 2023.

12. Up in Huron on the Lake Shore line is mty coal Train 553 out of Proviso Yard in Chicagoland. He's got NS 4439 and UP 9043 up front, and UP 8083 as a rear DPU and he's hustling.

13. UP 8083 is the rear DPU on the mty coal, seen here trailing away around the big curve over the W&LE at Huron.

14. Train L15 is at Vermilion bound for Sandusky with NS 1029 and 1097.

15. The pink blossums of Spring adorn the trees near the tracks.

16. Train 22X rips through Vermilion on the Lake Shore line with NS 8074, 9590 and 8003.

17. Lilacs are blooming against the bright blue sky this evening as we wait for the 22H.

18. And here he comes about an hour and fifteen minutes out of Vickers (east side of Toledo). He's short today and wasting no time. The power consist is made up of unusual numbers; NS 4099 and 9904.

And that ends our day here in Lake Erie Land.

I spent the day outside in Aberdeen, Maryland and it was cloudy and quite cold and breezy for a late April day. The blue skies arrived here in Eastern, PA, overnight. Unfortunately even with all the travel I saw nothing more than an overhead Amtrak Harrisburg Line bridge. You have a nice collection of lake boats, NS action and spring colors. The last photo from the Liberty Ave bridge is different!

The Liberty Ave bridge shot is a challenge. The sun has to be swung around enough to the West to get the light, but still high enough so there are no shadows. In reality I don't think the light is ever completely right. Besides that there are some pretty big wires in the way to try and get under (I am not into photoshopping to really alter an image to that extent).
Then to get this angle I needed to lay on the bridge sidewalk and shoot through the railing. You don't have much warning either for an eastbound. Then to try and get the darker shadows out and balance the never quite right light. Normally it is more of a challenge than I care to undertake, but it does give a unique view. It didn't help either that 22H was on Track 2, the far side.
