Hell Gate has fierce currents during tidal changes. The tide changes at eastern entrance to Long Island Sound, are hours ahead of tide changes at lower Manhattan. The entire Long Island Sound is influenced by tides affecting the area near Rhode Island, so the western end of the Sound is at different levels, than the Hudson. They meet at mortnern Manhattan. The Lower Hudson and Staten Island waters are affected by the Atlantic Ocean Tides near Staten Island & Manhattan. Hell Gate is where the Norh River ( New England tides) joins the Hudson River, influenced by the Atlantic tides in the lower Hudson basin. Hell Gate is at the very northernmost tip of Manhattan island. Hell Gate is also known as Spuyten Duyvil, Dutch for "Spit on the Devil! " Very high-speed water movements and severe, erratic currents. Many boats floundered and sunk in those waters. W. Date: 04/25/24 19:43 Re: Another "Where is this?" Question Author: livesteamer I believe that Spuyten Duyvil is located at the most northern tip of Manhattan where the East River (Harlem River) joins the Hudson River. The former NYC lines (now MNRR) leading from Grand Central station and the former NYC lines from the Highline (now Amtrak) converge near Spuyten Duyvil tfor the run up the east side of the Hudson river to Croton and on to Albany.
Spuyten Duyvil (/ËspaɪtÉn ËdaɪvÉl/, SPY-tÉn-DIE-vÉl[3]) is a neighborhood of the Bronx, New York City. It is bounded on the north by Riverdale, on the east by Kingsbridge, on the south by the Harlem River, and on the west by the Hudson River,[4] although some consider it to be the southernmost part of Riverdale.[5] taken from Wikipedia Marty Harrison Knob Noster, MO Edited 1 time(s). Dunno where Hell Gate is, but the Hell Gate Bridge is a few miles from Spuyten Duyvil. |
