Loram Shoulder Ballast Cleaner working in daylight!
Author: CSX2605

SBC 2402 was working the CSX CE&D sub on a windy October day in 2018. Thankfully the wind was blowing the dust away from the camera postition. My brother took the video for me as I was busy plus it was too windy to fly the drone.

From the Loram website:
Shoulder ballast cleaning consists of removing ballast at the end of the ties, screening the ballast and discarding fines and fouling material and restoring the good ballast to the shoulder. Integrated scarifiers break open end of tie mud pockets, removes fines, and restores ballast voids in the shoulders and under the tie ends and release damaging trapped water. By consistently excavating at levels up to 8 inches below the tie and restoring the ballast shoulder structure, obstructing fines in the crib are able to migrate and drain freely to the shoulder with dramatically improved seepage time.A regular discipline of shoulder ballast cleaning with Loram prolongs ballast life, reducing the frequency and cost of re-ballasting.

The benefits of shoulder ballast cleaning include:
  • Improved drainage that extends surfacing and undercutting cycles and reduces tamping needs up to 200%
  • Enhanced lateral resiliency and stiffness of track between 10-30%
  • Improved track quality index by 35%
  • Better track geometry under the freeze/thaw cycle
  • Inhibited vegetation growth, reducing the need for herbicide applications
  • Typically, no train speed restrictions following completed work

It's a dirty job, but somebody's gotta do it. Tell your brother "thanks" for me.

Nice video!  Why were they dumping the ballast firstly and then recycling it?

Bet that contraption is ultra expensive!  Amazing!  Is that stuff they're dumping alongside the track the crap filtered out of the ballast?

Yes, the fines ("crap"), are dumped along the R/W.  If there is no room along the R/W then it is dropped into the air side-dump to be unloaded later.

If things work out the fines being cast aside make a good base for a right of way road or to widen fills.
But in cuts it is always a thing to dispose of in air dump cars, where it can ride to a suitable location to widen a fill.
