Eastern Railroad Discussion > I&O SDs for Maryland MidlandDate: 06/26/24 03:30 I&O SDs for Maryland Midland Author: bigsavage Tipped off by a Virtual Rail cam sighting in Cumberland on Monday, by 11:05 Tuesday morning these 2 Indiana & Ohio SD50s were on a siding at Highfield, MD.
Maryland Midland's UBHF showed up shortly after, followed by the CSX L-whatever with its 2 boring GEs. MMID's train was around 55 cars, so a dance had to be done with CSX, who ended up with about 75 cars to go back to Hagerstown. ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 06/26/24 03:37 Re: I&O SDs for Maryland Midland Author: bigsavage 1. Maryland Midland leaves their outgoing cars on their main line, and rolls west to Fort Ritchie to get their incoming cut.
2. CSX then backs their train onto MMID tracks to get the outgoing cars. 3. MMID then returns with their incoming cars, and pulls onto the CSX Hanover Sub. ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 06/26/24 03:44 Re: I&O SDs for Maryland Midland Author: bigsavage 1.& 2. CSX then makes their exit west, this job also switches the grit mill at Greenstone, PA., 2 miles east on the CSX Hanover Sub.
3. MMID waits to make backup off CSX to regain their rails. The train left without picking up the 2 inbound units. ![]() ![]() ![]() Date: 06/26/24 07:19 Re: I&O SDs for Maryland Midland Author: aehouse Monday usually has the heaviest traffic for the MMID's UBHF.

I'm just grateful that I was able to ride many excursions over both of those lines back in the olden days when it was all the well maintained and operated Western Maryland Railway Company. They were great trips, some with steam and others with diesels.

Interesting that one of the Australian built - ex Hamersley Iron/NRL/Utah SD50S has moved east. NRL bought the five HI SD50S's and three C36-&'s in 1998 and moved them to the US. NS leased them as NREX units and then Utah bought the SD%)'s and Minnesota Commercial bought one of the C36-7's - since scrapped. If so, I must have a photo somewhere. Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 06/26/24 10:37 by train1275. Date: 06/26/24 11:09 Re: I&O SDs for Maryland Midland Author: NYSWSD70M train1275 Wrote:
