L642 leapfrogs G669 under a stormy sky
Author: scraphauler

CSXT L642-01 passes G669-28 in Hoffman NC on the CSXT Aberdeen Sub, aka the S Line, at 130pm Sunday September 1, 2024, under threatening sky's.   L642 is an extra Hamlet-Sanford turn, while the G669 is a loaded grain train headed to the ACWR.  Hoffman is roughly the half way point between Hamlet Yard and Aberdeen NC, and is just 4 or so miles up US 1 from THE ROCK - Rockingham Speedway, which this past week announced that it has secured dates for NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series and  NASCAR Xfinity Series races for Easter Weekend 2025, the track's first NASCAR sanctioned race since a truck series race in 2013.

S Line north of Hamlet is fairly quiet by mainline standards, but does still host a fair amount of traffic.  In addition to Amtrak Silver Star each way daily, line hosts L620 Hamlet to Raleigh, L621 Raleigh to Hamlet, B427 Lemon Springs to Wilmington, B439 Wilmington to Lemon Springs, and as needed L642s and G series trains.  620/621 operate M-F, 427/439 each operate 3 days a week - 427 usually runs T-TH-Sa, while 439 usually runs M-W-F.   The 620/621 pair forward traffic to/from the various locals based in Apex and Raleigh, as well as work the ACWR and AR interchange in Aberdeen.  All the G Series trains interchange complete with power with ACWR in Aberdeen - loads to ACWR, empties back - can be as few as one each way a week, can be as many as 2 each way a day - just depends on the grain market and feed demand of Perdue and Mountaire.   L642 operates when 620/621 is too large to handle the interchange work at Aberdeen (ACWR carload freight - non unit grain - can run 60, 70, 80 or more cars from time to time), or on weekends/holidays if sufficient traffic is built up in Hamlet.  Today's L642 featured head 36 for ACWR with 19 Raleigh's tacked to rear.  The 36 ACWR where handed off directly to a waiting pair of ACWR SD60Fs at Aberdeen.  They set off 1 plastic car in the yard for either Reliance Packaging or Bulldog Pipe in Aberdeen and took the took the other 35 cars  up the Sandhills Sub to their yard in Candor NC.  They will return to pickup the G669 later this afternoon/evening.  Meanwhile, the remaining 19 Raleigh's will head on up to Sanford to be set off for Apex based L614 to retrieve, then L642 will return lite form Sanford back to Hamlet.
