Weekend Round-up - Including an NKP Berk in Lake Erie Land
Author: train1275

Sunday November 24, 2024

A gloomy chill weekend with lots of miles on the car and burned lots of clock time around the tracks without much to show for it.

1. - 3. On Saturday November 23rd, NS Train 28B once again rolls east over the NKP approaching KM east of Vermilion ducking under the big Route 6 overpass with NS 4081 and 4177. I think this is only the 2nd time this week the train has run the NKP.

4. A little later on Saturday after we caught the 28B, we find the L15 coming through CP 222 west of Vermilion on the Lake Shore line with NS 1821 and 1809. That concluded the action caught on Saturday. The track off to the right is the east leg connector over to the NKP westward for Bellevue.

Sunday November 24th;

5. - 6. NKP 127, a  Diner-Lounge on display at the Mad River & Nickel Plate Museum at Bellevue.

7. N&W 514900, Big Hook at the Mad River & Nickel Plate Museum.

8. - 9. Well it was another Bellevue bust day as far as railfanning went. It was easier to catch a Nickel Plate Berk than it was to see a real operating train. We'll settle for the Berk ... operating or not. The 757 looks good in it's faded glory, but mssing a few parts.

10. - 12. Enjoying the 757 .... It is great to see this preserved steam locomotive, but on this gloomy day somewhat sad to see it in a cadaver state instead of being alive.

13. So we take one last look at the NKP 757 before taking off and wishing it was pulling out for Norwalk to do some work. Looking away and using our imagination, maybe it is.

14. - 15. Back in the real world and on the Lake Shore line just west of Vermilion, a headlight appears out of the west. It is Train 22H and he's hauling a$$. This morning we saw him on the Elkhart, IN rail cam, and now here he is just a little over four hours later coming by with NS 4522 and 1221.  On the rear is a lone Tesla autorack; TTGX 702690.

And that ends the weekend.

Neat Berk photos!

How many NKP Berks are still in existence?
757, 759, and 765?

The 'big hook' at Mad River still works; they fired it up just last week to unload a recently donated diesel 'critter' from a truck onto the rails at the museum.

#757 is out on the track for the upcoming holiday train rides at the Museum.  Eventually, it will be moved inside the new restoration building for the winter (just behind and to the left of it).
