I have seen so many photos of Green Mountain RR Alco RS-1 #405 over 50 years or so and one of my ambitions was to see it and ride behind it in service. Both achieved now. Perhaps I should have said to see it "in steam" and this shot, as my host Kevin Burkholder said that day, was worth the price of admission. Engineer Jason Aruda knew he was going to wind the old girl up if he saw us on the US-103 bridge and this is the result. It took ages for the dense smoke to clear and it totally obscured the receding shot of the red GP40 at the rear of the train that we intended to take from the other side of the bridge. My new definition of RS-1 means Real Smoky.

Next best thing to coal smoke.

I believe this is the same location (Rte. 103 overpass). . GMRC 405 and 401 back on 7/17/81. Looks like the trees have won again. Those RS-1s have a charmed life !  Thanks for the post and jogging my memory.
