Eastern Railroad Discussion > Carbondale After The Ice StormDate: 01/10/25 10:19 Carbondale After The Ice Storm Author: MaryMcPherson I usually don't hang around after rolling into town at 1:30am, but the scene in downtown Carbondale, Illinois, early Wednesday morning required some photography.
So what's the deal with these first three? This is a train site, ain't it? Where's the train? Where's the track? Glad you asked. The open-air pavillion downtown is actually comprised of the skeleton of the original Illinois Central freight station constructed when Carbondale was founded. Rather that either restore or demolish the building in 1991, the city council decided to take the middle road with this for the result. It just doesn't usually look quite so scenic. Across Main Street from the old freight house was the passenger station. Encrusted in ice, GP11 #8701 sits next to the station on what was once the track leading straight to the St. Louis District for passenger connections to the Gateway City.
5-6. 48 hours later, I was getting into the van to go home when the gates activated as the northbound City of New Orleans came rolling into town with P42 #196 in new paint in the lead. What the hey; I grabbed the phone. Mary McPherson Dongola, IL Diverging Clear Productions Date: 01/10/25 10:31 Re: Carbondale After The Ice Storm Author: refarkas Very well done.
