The inspector general of the US Department of Transportation has been terminated, along with the IGs of at least 14 other cabinet level departments. The IG serves as an independent watchdog over federal contract issues, compliance with the law, etc.  The Inspector General of the DOT also serves as the overseer of IGs in relevant agencies and operations  like mine safety, Amtrak, pipeline and truck safety, etc.

The Washington Post reports the firings apparently violate federal law, which requires a 30 day notice to the Senate before termination.   Agencies listed include Veterans' Affairs, Defense, Interior, EPA, Small Business Administration, etc

One of the original purposes of the IG is to keep an eye on contract fraud, inside deals, etc.  For that reason, many IG terms are set up to last longer than the President who appointed them. The Federal Reserve appointed members are done the same way, for the same reason.
