New Hampshire - Your favorite locations to see trains
Author: nydepot

Looking for some suggestions to see trains in NH. Anywhere - whether remote, across a trestle, along a lake, etc. I know there aren't many options and I'm not going to see 50 trains a day but I'll possibly be in NH this year and want to keep my options open. Thanks.

NH Railfanning options are limited: Amtrak/CSX along the Seacoast and the Conway Scenic RR through the White Mountains.

There are some good spots.  Amtrak's Vermonter visits Claremont twice a day along the New England Central line that hosts a few freights as well.  There is not a lot of trackage in NH, but certainly enough to make it interesting.  There is the Milford-Bennington, a seasonal line that is very unique over toward the southwest area of the state.  You may enjoy the upgraded Hillsborough Branch out of Nashua, or the line up to Concord, which sees trains a few days a week and serves Blue Seal as well as the A-B brewery, among other companies.  And yes, there is the Seacoast.  If you go there, be sure to catch the line between Newfields and Newington through Portsmouth.  It is active and you can often find the crew somewhere along the asecoast most days.  Finally, there is the New Hampshire Northern to Ossipee.  They have stone trains daily and also carry propane.

Oh, I forgot one.  The St. Lawrence and Atlantic tracks across the North Country (e.g., Berlin) between Portland and the Montreal area.

NH does not have a lot of action in terms of heavy frequencies, to be sure, but there are some interesting things to see, and there is activity of all sorts.  In fact, things are going well with what is left in the state.  And it is an unbelievably beautiful state.  You may well find that you enjoy the time between trains a bit more here than elsewhere.  I mean that.

If you need more specifics, just message me.

In the winter, stone trains don't appear to be running daily (per FB site).
In the summer, stone trains do not run on Friday (as I found out on one sunny Friday).

Yes, they are tied to the construction activity, and in New England, that drops off in the winter.  Stone trains are rarer, but do run.

Once at Dover, the stone trains run south on CSX to Boston, departing Dover around 8 pm, and returning in the wee hours.
