Eastern Railroad Discussion > Cincinnati north routingDate: 02/02/25 16:46 Cincinnati north routing Author: NS7112 Was in Cincy this weekend and specific location was Lockland. While the wife and daughter were dress shopping I went and sat trackside. Perfect timing as 4 sb's went by in about the span of 40mins all NS. Im pretty sure CSX and NS share trackage thru this area but not 100%. Do both railroads run their southbounds on this trackage(NS Dayton and New Castle district) thru Lockland and the northbounds up the Cincinnati Terminal trackage(CSX) splitting up at Hamilton, Oh? Thanks for any answers!!

Trains going north utilize CSX's former B&O Toledo Subdivision to Hamilton. Directional running began in May of 2000. There are obviously some exceptions, but that is the general pattern.

I've seen no NS that way though.

CSX locals run either direction on that line plus any traffic that is going to or from the Indianapolis line which diverges south of the NS connection at Butler St. Occasionally, I see southbounds come straight through Hamilton and south on the Toledo sub, but not very often. I'm wondering if there is a financial component to such decisions? In other words, if CSX has a southbound coming into Hamilton and there are no opposing northbounds lined up, will CSX route the southbound on its own rails to avoid paying NS for the use of the New Castle district trackage into Cincinnati?
