EL heritage SD45-2 in Lake Erie Land - Train 310
Author: train1275

Tuesday February 4, 2025
Vermilion, OH
29 degrees - strong cold winds

This morning watching the Vickers (Toledo, OH) cam and NS 1700 the EL heritage SD45-2 unit was 2nd out on a manifest heading east towards Vermilion. Shortly after, I learned it was on the 310, the Elkhart, IN to East Binghamton, NY train. So there was my incentive to get out and moving this morning. I had gotten it on January 29th when it went west - https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,5977493 - and now was an opportunity to get it going back east.

NS 1700 was originally EL 3669.

7.- 8. And there it goes heading for home rails once it gets to Buffalo. It will probably go to Scranton from East Binghamton on 11Z then work its way to New Jersey via Enola and Harrisburg, PA.

Back when EL 3669 was new in November 1972, the East Binghamton yard and facility had been shut down since 1970, but Scranton was still very active.

Good luck to those east of here trying to catch it on home rails, even though it is not on 2nd NY-100 or CX-99.

Consist was NS 4169, NS 1700 and rear DPU NS 4037.

Thanks.
The morning light was difficult to work with, but better than nothing.

Looks like new wheels might be in the future soon. They are looking on the
thin side.

And then to end the day, the NKP heritage went through Vermilion this afternoon under extremely overcast skies.

Train 60R, loaded sand with NS 8100 and 4441.

Good stuff! That 1700 is a beautiful locomotive, it sat in Mertztown, PA back in 2015 for quite some time until equipment could be brought out to swap a traction motor on the Atlas Minerals and Chemicals siding.

That little village never saw such an influx of people!

FWIW, railfan buzz on NS D&H and Southern Tier Lines FaceBook page says EL SD45-2 (NS1700) is to hang around Binghamton for awhile as a yard/local switcher. That would be an interesting development!

Of course, back in the early '70s, EL used ex-DL&W SW8s and ex-Erie NW2s for yard switching in Binghamton.

Cool news !!

That EL 369 spent most of its EL life in Binghamton I think.

Looks like Richie Dundon hanging off the rear of it.
