Broken rail in a street crossing 3-8-21
Author: CSX2605

A broken rail in the 6th St crossing in Vincennes, IN caused an impromptu closure of 6th St much to the delight of local motorists. CSX I025 is too hot to make him wait so I025 came across the break at walking speed. That's a long time to get 13,486' of train over at walking speed on the CE&D sub! Eventually 25 made it across and the crew got busy getting the concrete panels off the ties and put in a new stick of rail. Once finished 6th St was opened back up for motorists.

Interesting. In a derailment on N&W near Hamilton, Indiana, reportedly the rail did not break but seperated at the joint.

It was under a road crossing!.

I was surprised that a joint would have been right there. Is that considered OK on jointed rail? It would seem a rail joint would take quite a beating under a road crossing. Back then, rail lengths were 39 ft., IIIRC.

Very interesting. I believe a standard piece of "stick" rail until recently was 39'?

A standard stick is 39'....but we call any piece long enough to matter be to a stick....maybe 'a short stick'

Lolol! Gave all the carryout customers of Bill Bobe's pizzeria a chance to count IM cars, and allow the delicious flavors of the large Farouk pizzas to blend and enjoy. Gotta think positive.

I can count the cars from Bobe's! LOL! We just ate there two nights ago and had one train pass. Burger King is close to the tracks with a great view of the trains.

The crew only got to walk across that one because it was in the crossing and both ends were on a tie.
