Eastern Railroad Discussion > NS 60Q rolls through the NS high tech detector in Jackson, GaDate: 03/01/25 14:43 NS 60Q rolls through the NS high tech detector in Jackson, Ga Author: crescent NS 60Q (rail train) is lead by a lone ES44DC (NS 7632) and is running southbound as it proceeds through Norfolk Southerns new high tech defect detector (Digital Train Inspection (DTI) Portal) in Jackson, Ga.
This location is on Norfolk Southerns Atlanta South district that runs between Atlanta, Ga. & Macon, Ga. Also NS would do good to get a new sign maker as you will see in the video. Edited 2 time(s). Well, one never knows when they may need to take shelter from a shorm! Gonut Date: 03/01/25 16:05 Re: NS 60Q rolls through the NS high tech detector in Jackson, Ga Author: x6924w You know the old saying "any shelter in a shorm". Guess that applies here!!

Date: 03/01/25 17:58 Re: NS 60Q rolls through the NS high tech detector in Jackson, Ga Author: RMD23 Looks like the reporting marks are SDIX, so likely this is a train owned by Steel Dynamics the producer. Assuming NS is still using only captive 'in-house and on-network' CWR trains for it's rail delivery, my guess is this might be headed for FEC, or maybe a large public port project somewhere.

NS has a 2 minute video on this very detector.....you can look it up under (Norfolk Southern deploys second Digital Train Inspection portal in Georgia) Edited 2 time(s). Together, this Machine Vision Inspection technology captures ultra-high-resolution, 360-degree images of passing railcars. The cameras are synced to the microsecond, taking 1,000 images per rail car on average as they pass through the tunnel at speeds up to 70 miles per hour. The high-speed cameras are strategically placed at angles to capture things that are difficult to detect with the human eye during stationary inspections. In addition, capturing images while the train is in a dynamic state provides an inspection for various defects that cannot be done while the train is stationary. AI analyzes these images for potential defects.
Norfolk Southern’s in-house Data Science/AI team has developed 38 advanced Deep Learning algorithms and already deployed them at across heavily trafficked lanes. These best-in-class, field-proven algorithms have demonstrated very high accuracy levels, while having very low false-alarms. The AI transmits the information to Norfolk Southern’s Network Operations Center (NOC) where the data is reviewed by subject-matter experts to identify and address issues to proactively ensure the safety of rail operations. Critical defects found are flagged for immediate handling. Date: 03/02/25 18:59 Re: NS 60Q rolls through the NS high tech detector in Jackson, Ga Author: ctillnc > speeds up to 70 miles per hour
Does this mean that if a detector is located on straight track that supports passenger trains at 79 mph, they'll have to slow down for it? Date: 03/03/25 19:48 Re: NS 60Q rolls through the NS high tech detector in Jackson, Ga Author: Mojacket ctillnc Wrote:

If there was passenger traffic on that line, yes. But there is not. I assume these detector boxes will be built in many places. Date: 03/05/25 04:54 Re: NS 60Q rolls through the NS high tech detector in Jackson, Ga Author: mbrotzman Mojacket Wrote:

Might have trouble working at all on pasenger trains as to power machine learning tools they would need a large set of labeled training data. NS would get this data from flagging defects in a yard then labeling the earlier portal scans of those cars as defective. Not sure NS is able to inspect the Amtrak equipment or if there's enough instances of defective Amtrak equipment to create a good training set. |
