Eastern Railroad Discussion > Working the soil while a train rolls southDate: 03/04/25 02:42 Working the soil while a train rolls south Author: CSX2605 We started working ground yesterday for potato planting. Here is a 12,890' M205 passing by the tractor tilling up the field. CSX M205 is on it's last 60 miles of the trip from Selkirk to Evansville, IN. Hopefully we can start planting by the 15th but Mother Nature will decide when it's go time. Kind of like the railroad, we're on the extra board waiting for a phone call. ;)
Our farm is south of Vincennes, IN with 2 miles of the CE&D sub next to the property. ![]() You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! Date: 03/04/25 04:29 Re: Working the soil while a train rolls south Author: jmbreitigan Neat video.

One app monitors our center pivot irrigation systems and lets us know the position of the system or if one shuts down for an unknown reason. It is neat having the tracks right here. If I'm around I see everything that passes by and if it's really cool I chase it down if possible. ;) Date: 03/04/25 15:53 Re: Working the soil while a train rolls south Author: CSX2605 Tominde Wrote:

My son was running the tractor. I have another video to upload tomorrow and I was flying from the cab in that one with a grain train passing. As an 83 year old recalling past years of farming with my father in Western Kansas, your modern tractor and the dynamic handling of such nowdays is so great to see! In my days it was on an McCormic-Dearing, International W-9 LP powered tractor with one-way plows, disks, harrows, old JD rotary hoes, or tandem grain drills. No cab and only a canvas umbrella for shade. So lots of dust from tractor wheels and implements to dust you down. Some days the flying ants would love to collect on top your cap, so a pole with burlap tied to the top attracted them there.
Then, there were a few inventive farmers that designed their own 4-wheel drives by use of two LA Case tractors coupled together and operated from the lead tractor with the one operator. The rear tractor had the front axle removed and was hitched to the lead unit by a long drawbar. Linkage to clutch and throttle on rear tractor passed along top of rear unit and was hand operated by the front driver. I had no railroad alongside me like you, so I spent what evenings possible with the "car toad" at Horace, KS on the Missouri Pacific Line. A good time and way for an evening cool down!! With the power of the auto train you filmed, I assume these two power units were dragging empty cars. Thanks so much for displaying and we all look forward to your sharing of more in the future, when you're able and not caring for your potatoes! Safe and Happy farming to you and yours!! |
