Looks like the end for two former BN E9As
Author: EL833

I was able to witness what will probably be the last mainline move of this pair of former Burlington Northern E9As today. Former New York, Susquehanna and Western 2400 and 2402 were delivered to LTEX at Lordstown, Ohio by CSX local L324. A cut slug and a road mate in a GP30 carbody accompanied the Es into Larry's. In the first pic we see the entire set off inside LTEX- yes, they actually have customers in there. There were several reefer cars in that set off that contain frozen french fries for one of those customers, and I noticed the LTEX switcher was waiting to grab them. I had only a few moments to send the bird in to catch the 2400 uncoupled. Photo two is one I took in June, 1978 of what would eventually become NYSW 2400, BN 9921. Photo three is the L324 pulling up to back around the wye at Lordstown. These two Es looked pretty rough, so I doubt they will become anything more than a parts source. More to come....

The 2402 today, an then how it looked in July, 1979. Slug 1024 is a former C&O GP9 (5993).

CSX L324 with it's LTEX set off.
Other trains this morning included C035's DPU and M370, all at Lordstown, Ohio.

Hope you don't mind me including these two photos of when NYSW 2400 and NYSW 2402 in service back on September 10,2000. They were the motive power for an excursion on NJT's Raritan Valley Line that I recall ran from Dunellen to North Branch, NJ. In the first photo NYSW 2400 is crossing the Raritan River in North Branch. The second photo shows NYSW 2402 heading east as it is approaching the Somerville Station.

As for those two E units now at LTEX, depending on their condition overall and depending on whether or not anyone is interested in purchasing them as is, they could be resold and put back into service again.  LTEX is always looking to sell locomotives that they acquire, and unless they are so far gone that the value in them is better for selling their parts or to scrap them outright, time will tell.

Larry's Truck seems rarely to be in a hurry to scrap anything.  So anyone wth some funds could step in and buy these if they really wanted to.  But Larry's isn't going to give anything away.  However, I would bet they would sell them for a fair price to a serious buyer.

Does anybody know the history of the dome car behind the 2400 in the first photo?

The E9s were stored for years on Cape Cod, where they never saw any use other than as an HEP sled.  Cape Rail's owner recently said that he considered trying to get at least one back into shape, but they were really clapped out - he estimated a minimum of $300K to make one unit useable.  I don't think they have much of a future; hopefully at least the trucks survive to help restore a more viable unit.

Did the former CB&Q units have car-bodies made from unpainted Stainless steel? Is that how they had such shiny car-bodies?
