Eastern Railroad Discussion > Washout Bridge at the White River, Nov. 2016Date: 04/15/25 03:45 Washout Bridge at the White River, Nov. 2016 Author: CSX2605 I thought I would add to my post on the White River flooding https://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?2,6011057 showing the Washout Bridge south of the actual river bridge. This was on the former C&EI which became part of the L&N around 1968. The red arrow on the map is the location of the Washout Bridge. The video was taken 11-6-16 with my old drone.
On March 28, 1913 the waters of the White River flowed over the railroad embankment about a mile souh of the White River Bridge tearing out 1,700' of roadbed and 50 to 60' deep. Bridge gangs, pile drivers and bridge material were rushed to the scene. Construction for a temporary trestle started on April 4th and was completed on April 20th. In 1916 and 1917 1,100 feet of trestle was filled in with earth and mine refuse dumped from cars standing on the trestle. The track was raised 4 feet and a new steel bridge consisting of 7 through girder spans, each 91 feet long, were constructed and installed. This is Bridge 2477 and is known as the Washout Bridge. It was said that this is the most costly mile of track that the C&EI owns. ![]() ![]() You must be a registered subscriber to watch videos. Join Today! There is no way to get down there except to trespass. I know the land owner and it was dry and the river was low so I was able to drive the pickup down to the river bank across from the bridge. I drove all the way from Decker. It was the weekend before gun season opened for deer hunting so I was safe.
