Steam on the Wheeling, rare Cleveland Sub move
Author: EL833

Chased the ferry move of NKP 765 from the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic in Akron, Ohio to the Wheeling and Lake Erie's Brewster, Ohio yard this past Monday. 765 running on the CVSR has been well covered for many years, so the big draw for me was to catch this rare move while on the W&LE, especially on their Cleveland Sub from Mogadore (near Akron) through Canton to Brewster. Another big draw was the lack of big crowds that were everywhere along the CVSR the two weekends prior.

NKP 765 eastbound on the former Akron, Canton and Youngstown in Akron.
Now on the Cleveland Sub (original W&LE track), shown rolling across the Wingfoot Lake causeway, Suffield Township (south of Mogadore).
Middlebranch, Ohio with the Essroc silos in the background.

...more to come

Pretty ticked off that PTC killed off the chances of having more excursion specials with steam engines leading, PSR probably would make the steam programs feel ashamed

I put the NKP Berks (and their cousins) and the NYC Hudsons in the same category: a successful design, very aesthetically pleasing, that exudes power.

There are still opportunities out there to see steam.  Without commenting further, just be thankful........

OK, now just how did come up with that screw-ball statement. The implementation of PTC had little to nothing to do with the loss of SOME steam excursions on class 1 main lines. It was/is all about liability insurance! Even if a steam locomotive is equipped with PTC, the BNSF, UP, NS, nor CSX will allow passenger carrying excursions.

How did they get the train from the Valley RR to the AC&Y?
Did they have to do a switchback move down at the Carter-Jones lumber yard to get to the AC&Y - and if they did, was the entire train able to fit on the Carter-Jones tail track?
Or is there some other place or way to make that move?  (It's been a long time since I lived there, and I don't recall a there being a good connection between the Valley and the AC&Y.)
