NS Collision/Wreck Question?????
Author: Switchback

On www.railpictures.net, there is a picture of an NS C38-8 8641 that was in a collision with another train at Sugar Vally, Georgia. The date on this picture is August of 1990. This looks like a really bad wreck. Does anybody have any details on this collision? Any info would be appreciated.

I went to look at the aftermath of that wreck. There was a four axle EMD involved in that collision that was unrecognizeable. It was my understanding that one train took the siding and fell asleep (the wreck was at night) while moving. They let their train run out the other end of the siding and into the path of the train they were meeting, thus the headon collision.

Train 188 with 2 C39s (8641 leader) ran out the end of the siding and hit head-on with Local train G38 behind 2799/3994. There were 3 fatailities, and 8641, 2799 and 3994 were all totalled and scrapped. Date was 8-9-90. Manifest was moving 28 mph thru the siding, local was doing 42 mph on approach.
