Good skip or good radio?
Author: UPSdriver

Heading to work this morning (Newport News) and heard several symbols on CSX that threw me for a loop. Then realized I was picking up CSX AU dispatcher from D.C.! Most likely a signal skip due to recent weather, but sure would make a great ad for ICOM!

Skip.

When it is "in" you can hear all kinds of interesting things.

For example, 2 days ago there was a spectacular "close-in"

skip event on 6 meters that also became a "far-skip" event

on 2 meters. Worked into southern Florida on 2 meters with

modest gear.

We can hear AU when running the Piedmont sub in some places; say, within twenty miles of Fredrick's Hall, but today we heard AU all the way almost to Charlottesville. It was a banner day for reception to be sure.

Propagation is good out here right now too. I noticed I was hearing stuff I normally don't hear. Just wish it would stay that way.

Are you hearing 'Ham' stuff or Train 'stuff'?
Thanks.

Yeah those were a strange couple of days. On 6 meters (50-54 MHz) I was getting traffic from Ontario CN, Texas and Florida in my truck off of a no frills lipmount antenna. There were some other southern accents that I couldn't make out as well. And this was from my driveway in the river valley in Connecticut. Didn't hear too much on 2m (144-148) or railroad channels, but where I am, there isn't too much RR traffic on the radio.
