Eastern Railroad Discussion > Monon green light signalsDate: 11/29/04 06:24 Monon green light signals Author: GTWGregg Are any of those interesting signals the monon used still around? For those who don't know about these signals, They are lights that are green when no trains are around. When a train comes, the light shuts off and a stop sign controls the crossing. Are there any at museums?

There may be one still on the Monon between Mitchell and Louisville, but not for sure. Date: 11/29/04 15:34 Re: Monon green light signals Author: Bryan_ I thought L&N did away with all of these. You might want to post the question at http://groups.yaho.com/group/lnrr .
Date: 11/29/04 17:04 Re: Monon green light signals Author: K8DTI There were quite a few in service until at least the mid-90's between Mitchell and New Albany. Here are two photos of them:

Date: 11/29/04 22:14 Re: Monon green light signals Author: Bumping_Post They are all gone. There was an FRA waiver to operate them, being non-standard. CSX was concerned there could be lawsuits from accidents over a "odd" signal apparatus.
Date: 11/30/04 08:21 Re: Monon green light signals Author: Monon An article describing the Monon's unique "Green Light" signals appeared in the Monon Railroad Historical and Technical Society publication THE HOOSIER LINE, Volume 13 #1, published in January, 1994. The article gives the history and operation of the signal.
Basically, it was connected to the ABS signals and the green light went out when a train entered the block with the signal. (No constant warning time here!) Copies are available from their Stores Department. http://www.monon.org/store.html Bob Wheeler, Archivist, Monon RRHTS. |
