what is it where is it?

just wondering if anyone knows what it is and where it is? this is the first time I have ever seen one. I have a guess or 2 as to what it is. but anyone else know for sure what it is

It's for that DD box (or is it a greaser?). Either way, there is one marking the Cove, PA DD.

The signs are probably to warn a snowplow operator to lift the flanger for this track lubricator.

That's exactly what they mean. "Raise flanger" signs were very common in the snow regions of CR. I believe other railroads have variations of this sign as well.

I think you see something similar on CN and CP lines in Canada. IIRC, they use a horizontal rectangle sign that has two filled circles.

The photo may be decieving, but it looks like short notice to get the flanger up in time! Also wondering why a lubricator on tangent? Or is this the beginning of a curve behind the photographer?

it is looks straight line to me to south, i did not notice any turns going the other way north it seems also very straight to me but I am not 100 percent sure....this the train coming from the south before the greaser
maybe someone here from the grand rapids area knows more as to why it is there
