Date: 07/07/05 05:11 Re: Attacks on London Underground and Buses Author: mderrick Actually, it is pertinent for awareness for ANYONE railfanning ANY line. You can most likely expect increased vigilence and questioning around any rail facility after an event such as this, especially passenger and transit stations.
Mike Derrick http://www.shortlinesusa.com Date: 07/07/05 06:34 Re: Attacks on London Underground and Buses Author: csx5000 yea it needs to be cross posted. the underground is a part of a railroad structure so it need sthat.
railfan1 out Date: 07/07/05 07:13 Re: Attacks on London Underground and Buses Author: toledopatch But are there really that many TO members who visit only one discussion board, and who live in caves and don't hear the news about incidents like this one? I tuned in to ESPN Radio this morning and the bombings were mentioned repeatedly.
I realize that these attacks are likely to stiffen the security paranoia* concerning public transportation, which certainly could affect railfans, but that doesn't mean this news itself needs to be on the Eastern North America board if it's already on the Public Transportation and International boards. *-I use the word paranoia because as the London case demonstrates, those with a will to cause harm will find a way, and there's not a whole lot that stopping photographers can do about it. London has been much more security conscious over the years because of the Irish Republican Army threat, yet this happened there anyway. A lot of what has passed for "security" in this country has been of the "See, we're doing something" variety, rather than figuring out a way to infiltrate the terrorist groups and poison their drinking water. Keep in mind, DP, you sit in a newsroom and the rest of us don't. My mailroom guy hadn't heard about London at 9:30 this morning. I hadn't heard that there's a tentative deal to settle the hockey labor dispute until a fellow hockey addict called me about 10 to tell me. > I realize that these attacks are likely to stiffen > the security paranoia* Even paranoids have real enemies. BobE, not going anywhere near commuter rail for the foreseeable future Date: 07/07/05 07:37 Re: Attacks on London Underground and Buses Author: toledopatch Actually, Bob -- and as I mentioned in my post -- I learned about the bombings on my car radio -- and on "sports" radio to boot, not from being in a newsroom.

Date: 07/07/05 13:29 Re: Attacks on London Underground and Buses Author: BaltoJoey I know if it was their family affected (God forbid). The persons criticizing the high security being taken. Would be the first ones demanding to know why stricter precautions were not taken.
The world's safety is changing (for the worse I think), whether we like it or not. This planet is filled with dangerous fanatics, both foreign and domestic. Who will stop at nothing to fulfill their own agenda. There are some here who say that nothing can be done to prevent these attacks. That is pure balderdash. If we have that mindset, then that is a victory for these maniacs. We will still be able to practice our hobby. But we will have to do so, mindful of the stepped up security. I have no problem with law enforcement asking me to identify myself and wanting to know what I am doing. I do know that some have a gung ho attitude. In that instance, simply leave and go elsewhere. There are other places to railfan. BaltoJoey Date: 07/07/05 14:09 Re: Attacks on London Underground and Buses Author: kevink dsktc Wrote:

Many "real Americans" very much follow hockey; though they could be forgiven if in the last year, they have not done so. If the NHL and the players have reached an agreement, great! I will be going to a Columbus Blue Jackets game or two next fall and winter. I may get to see an NS or CSX train passing next to Nationwide Arena in Columbus on the way in.

Putting a few extra cops on trains is only going to strech budgets a little further . Again terrorist wins ...he broke the normalcy. If you really want to know terror ask a Londoner about the World War Two nightly blitze's , especially in the East end of the city . Of course, we're not supposed to criticize spelling/grammar on TO, but since this thread has gone off-course anyway, I don't think it does any harm in this case to point out these little error's [sic].... |
