Baltimore Light Rail "Work Trains"

The closure of the northern part of Baltimore's Light Rail Line for double-tracking has resulted in some interesting equipment along the route. This "wire train" was at Warren Road in Cockeysville on Sunday, July 31.

Do they cross the NEC some place and if so does anyone have a picture of a bridge (presuming it's a bridge) with catenary over catenary?

They cross a little North of the stop near Mt. Royal Station. In fact, after they cross is when the Light Rail joins the track of The Northern Central RR.

Actually, the light rail crosses over the NEC on a bridge inside a trunnel that is on top of a tunnel. Got that?

Here's how it works: The light rail crosses the NEC at North Ave. At this point the NEC is inside the so-called B&P tunnel, which in turn is underneath the North Ave. street viaduct. The light rail line simultaneously crosses under North Ave. in a pair of short tunnels originally used by a Northern Central freight branch, while crossing over the top of the B&P tunnel. Because the roof of the B&P tunnel wasn't strong enough to support railroad tracks on top of it, the tracks are carried over it (while still in the tunnel, remember) on a short girder bridge.

The CSXT main line, which is adjacent to the light rail, crosses under North Ave. using the same type of structure.

So...the next time you ride the light rail under North Ave., sit up front, keepyour eyes open, and watch for the bridge-in-a-tunnel-over-a-tunnel.

BRAVO, WELL SAID!

The crossing of the two is truly convoluted, to say the least. I never meant to imply that you would see wires over wires.
