Please ID this Locomotive
Author: Charles

What model of locomotive is this? I think it is an Alco something. It is stamped LIMA and MADE IN ITALY on the bottom of the fuel tank so from what I gather is was made by Lima.

Thanks in advance.

Charles

The "model" is an Alco "C(entury)-420".

UP had none.

Hope this helps,

Bob

Two (opps) three replies almost at the same time. Thanks for the ID. It really doesn't bother me that UP never owned any, I just thought that it looked nice, even if I didn't know type of locomotive it was.

Thanks again,
Charles

Why does the rear truck look "saggy" and lower than the front?

I thought Rivarossi was OK stuff? (I am not a HO guy)

Sorry Charles, hope you didn't pay much for this model. I also have some (Life Like) that I wish I hadn't bothered wasting the $$$.

The truck covers are loose. I only put them loosely on to take the picture. The trucks are some broken gears that I am trying to track down a source to get replacements. I think that NWSL is going to come through there.

I paid $10 for it, and it did run even with the broken teeth on some idler gears and loose gears on the wheelsets. The trucks are OK when I put everything back together.

I was able to play it some over several days at the LHS where I work part-time. I figured the drive gears wouldn't be too difficult to replace but the idler gears took me by surprise. And in the work case, I can always take it back to work and refund my money. <grin>

I was wondering if someone would notice that.

Bad news for parts, looks like bad news for Rivarossi? Hope NWSL comes through for you....

Actually, that shell's pretty decent, although not quite up to the current state of the art. You could probably plop it right down on an Atlas C424/425 drive, although you'd have to cut the pilots and steps off the trucks and mount them on the frame. This shell might also fit on an Athearn U30B drive, but the fuel tank would be wrong.

"Wlankenau" is correct, the shell fits right on the Atlas C424/425 frame with very little alteration. I had the same C420 and was very disappointed that it had such a high minimum speed. The use of the Atlas drive gave me a unit that operates great MUed with my Atlas, Kato, and brass diesels.
