Model Railroading > STE777 - the modelDate: 05/29/07 20:41 STE777 - the model Author: wfre Almost done - still have to paint the wipers, add the numbers to the numberboards and wait for my LHS to get me a supply of ditchlights.
Tx to steamco & trainjunkie for help with the silver color and fonts - and to those who posted the wonderful pix on the Western Board. Walt in Sausalito Date: 05/29/07 21:07 Re: STE777 - the model Author: tracktime Excellent! Man.. the ranks of switchers is increasing on this board this week!
Did you run the decals on an Alps printer? Cheers, Harry Date: 05/29/07 21:41 Re: STE777 - the model Author: cct24 OUTSTANDING WALT!!!
Date: 05/29/07 23:07 Re: STE777 - the model Author: wfre Tx for the compliments, guys.
Yes, Harry - my trusty ALPS MD-1000 did the job. For those interested, the font on the body is Bank Gothic Medium - free font off the web. Forget what I used for the cab number - but it was a standard MS Truetype with some editing of points to get the top horizontal and downstroke looking as close as I could judge. I toned down the silver a bit - Pollyscale ATSF silver/undercoat gray/UP Harbor Mist Gray 7/2/1 - basically was shooting for about a 2/1 silver/medium gray mix and those were the grays that I had on hand. The only detail parts needed that did not come with the undec (Atlas) are the ditchlights (DW 228 and MV lenses to match) and the horn - I settled for SP-style PSC 39085 even though the mount is too high relative to stack height. I'll probably end up replacing the plastic sunshades w. A-line 29210. The drive is superbly smooth - I'll have it out running at the club in a couple fo weeks coupled with my CCT44 model (Epling has pix of my model and a detailed writeup on his Central California website) - and my STE505 S-1. BTW, I did put on the Atlas-supplied MU hoses which do not appear in any of the proto photos posted so far - so I'm not sure whether the proto is MU-equipped or not. Anyone know ? Looks great. Doug Date: 05/30/07 16:44 Re: STE777 - the model Author: GP30 Beautiful work and thank you for specifically mentioning the font and how you located it. Seldom has it been easy for me to find a matching font when making my own decals so it helps to know what others have learned and used. Thank you for showing your fine modeling work here.
GP30 Date: 05/30/07 17:29 Re: STE777 - the model Author: MrMRL Great paintjob & decals! I know someone on this forum (cough,...RGZ17) who would be mighty impressed, but then again he falls in love with anything "7" related.
Just out of curiosity, is this Atlas MP15DC one of the non-sound/DCC versions? If so, will you be adding a DCC chip to it? ...also if so, what chip will you be adding? I have three SRY Raillinks I need to DCCize (wasn't impressed with the sound enough to pay $100 more each). I don't know what will fit in these, N/Z scale NCE? Digitrax? Lenz? Any help/insight is greatly appreciated. Mr. SRY Date: 05/30/07 21:38 Re: STE777 - the model Author: wfre MrMRL Wrote:

Yes, this is the Atlas non-sound silver series - no DCC. No plans to add sound (or DCC) - I'm not that taken with the "novelty" of sound, based on the few (BLI) units that I have. Run Silent, Run Deep :-) Walt in Sausalito Date: 05/31/07 06:21 Re: STE777 - the model Author: csxt4617 I'm not real familiar with digitrax decoders, but one option you could use would
be a TCS MC2 decoder (if you only want 2 functions. They also have an MC4 and MC6 that are the same size, with 4 and 6 functions, respectively), and a 1" harness. I think that's enough wire so the decoder will fit in the filter box area between the cab and the exhaust stacks. The MC2 decoder is really small, and has a mini 7 pin plug on one end. The harness would go from that mini 7 pin plug to the standard NMRA 8 pin plug on the Atlas PCB. That's the way I'll probably go whenever I get around to equipping mine with DCC. |
