Model Railroading > C415 CabsDate: 07/26/07 21:56 C415 Cabs Author: bnsfsd70 Hi, I know that the C415 was built with multiple different cab heights. I have recently gotten ahold of one of the old AHM units that I'm looking to hack into a respectable model of a RI unit, and I was wondering if the AHM cab is correct for the Rock units. If not, what part of the cab would need to be modified to be "more correct?" Thanks a lot, Jeff

Here was a quick and dirty job I did on one of them to get as close as I could to a SP&S C415: http://www.trainorders.com/discussion/read.php?3,1033992,1033992#msg-1033992 J. A thing that needs to be done to the AHM for certain is to get rid of that round fan opening on the top of the front hood. That fan only appeared on the Demo C415, production models didn't have it.
Speaking of production - there were 26 C415's manufactured. They were Alco Demo - 1 built - Medium Cab and ARR B trucks SP - 10 built - High Cab and ARR B trucks CRI&P - 10 Built - Medium Cab and ARR B trucks Monogahila Connecting - 1 built - Low Cab with Hi-Ad trucks SP&S - 2 built - Medium Cab and Hi-Ad trucks Columbia and Cowlitz - 1 built - High Cab and Hi-AD trucks CM&E - 1 built - High Cab with Hi-Ads Date: 07/27/07 07:13 Re: C415 Cabs Author: SP6190 Date: 07/27/07 12:56 Re: C415 Cabs Author: tracktime From what I seem to recall, the AHM C415 had the high cab on it.

I was given special treatment by Ohio River Terminals (Huntington WVA) the last and final owner of the ex BN/SP&S pair. They fired up 4011 and bounced her out of the shop for pix. It had terrible wheels on it. Both were unceremoniously cut up after no buyer could be found.
Larry Date: 07/28/07 21:00 Re: C415 Cabs Author: shadow A buyer couldn`t be found for them at the price that was requested for them. I`m not sure but if I`m correct the Buffalo Southern made a bid for both of them and the owner felt that they were worth more as scrap. Supposedly the trucks needed so much work done to them to make them transit worthy the BSOR felt that the price didn`t justify the cost of bringing the trucks up to spec, on top of purchasing the units.

Hmm. If I'm not mistaken (and I could be), one of the C430's on WNYP lost its Hi-Ads in favor of AAR-B's. Do they suffer from metal fatigue, cracking, something like that? Date: 07/31/07 21:09 Re: C415 Cabs Author: shadow I haven`t seen anything about any of the C430`s having the trucks changed out, although I do recall that the Suskie had cracking problems with the truck frames.
I think the biggest problem with the ex-SPS/BN C415`s were very flat wheelsets. John W. |
