which sound decoder to use for dummy loco?
Author: Stevelton

I just bought an athearn f7b dummy that I plan on running with my 2 f3a's, which already have decoders in them. Is there a sound only decoder for EMD 2nd generation sounds and a k5 horn that I can install in the dummy, completely separate from from the 2 powered locos?
I see several sound decoders that say they either have to be used with a motor control decoder or have motor control built in. Could I just use an MRC sound decoder and just not hook it up the wire that would normally run to the motor?

Thanks, Steven

why do you want a turbo charged locomotive for an F unit?
Soundtrax makes what your looking for....

Yeah, he's right; F units are first generation diesels...

I knew I should have given a little more info about that. I model a modern freelanced railroad, and our executive/heritage locomotive fleet include the above mentioned f3a/f7b, which are really (in my mind anyways) like the UP "E38-2" traped in an E9 carbody. So mine on the inside have emd dash 2 componants and a newer prime mover.

F units are first generation. If I were you, I would just make the dummy unit a housing for some nice speaker enclosures for say two speakers. One speaker for the lead, one for the trailing. You could get a nice sounding consist that way, the speaker wire would look like mu cable. No decoders would be necessary.

2nd generation doesn't have to be turbocharged...GP38-2's and SW1500's
aren't turbocharged.

MRC makes a nice SD45-2 in the Sounder, but it doesn't have anything resembling a K5 horn. What you want is a Soundtraxx DSX, 2nd generation EMD with the Nathan K5 horn. You may have to order and wait for Soundtraxx to run more. Your best bets are Tony's and Litchfield station, but anyone that has one in stock would work.

Thanks for clarifying it though.

no prob. I wasn't familiar with what Soundtraxx had, but I knew there were
non-turbo'd 2nd generation units on the real thing :)
