Walthers Obs Car and DCC
Author: Charles

I would like to put a decoder in the Walthers Great Northern Observation car that I have. Any suggestions on how to go about it. I prefer TCS decoders, the basic install should be the same.

Walthers cars have tabs just under the roof for adding a lighting kit. Since you prefer TCS, use a "fleet lighter" FL2 decoder. Just attach the red and black wires to those tabs. Then run your lights. Sorry, I don't have that exact car so I can't give you more specifics.

By the way regular solder will not take to the Walthers tabs.

Do you really need a decoder just to run lights in a passenger car? maybe just run lights off the track power?

With DCC it is nice to be able to turn off the lights when they are in a yard. Also you can get a single aux. out type decodrder at a very reasonable price.
