Anyone Need a Bridge?
Author: funnelfan

Work and other things conspired to not allow me to do anything model railroad wise for the past two weeks. And worse yet, I've have some projects all ready to go during that time that I really wanted to do. So finally I get a good day off work and tore into the first project with zeal. I took one of the new Trainman bulkhead flatcars and added a pair of Details West "Trombone" cut levers, replaced the accumate couplers with Kadee Whisker couplers and weathered the heck out of it. I then had a package of Rix Bridge Beams that I assembled into a load. I placed the car in a friend's train while at the club last night. The car preformed flawlessly.
There are still some things to do. In fact I I'm looking for something the represent flat steel banding that would be durable. I really will need that for the structural steel load I'm going to make for the TTX Bulkhead flat next.

Years ago I used chart-pak tape to represent the metal banding for loads like this. This is a plastic-tape material that was used extensively old-school drafting and design tasks. It's flexible and comes in really small widths - 1/32" IIRC, which looked pretty good as banding on a freight car load. You used to be able to find this material in art and drafting supply stores. I haven't looked for it in a while, but if you can find it, it might serve your needs.

You may want to research the weight of those beams. I think a load of 8 may be overloading the car.

That is one nice looking bulkhead flat. Nice weathering job.

Some other people already figured out that the load was right at the 100 ton limit of the car. And it wasn't like I was trying either, I thought that the 10 beams looked about right for a load.

Ted,
What about the thin pinstriping tape that dealers put on cars? I think the auto parts stores have it. upkpfan
